It is scheduled for the month of November, specifically from the 7th to the 18th, the 27th Annual Conference of the United Nations (UN), on Climate Change (COP27), in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, which will have as one of the main partners the Vodacom group.
The agenda for this year’s COP27 highlights the urgency of countries around the world, including developing nations, coming together to keep global warming below 1.5°C, and includes a day dedicated to agriculture and food systems.
Meanwhile, Vodacom, being a major partner and recognising that climate change poses a risk to business, Government and communities alike, has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, and has an established guide to reduce waste and water consumption across its operations.
The Managing Director of Vodacom Mozambique, Simon Karikari, said in his speech that “as a technology company, our digital solutions and capabilities play a crucial role that help society mitigate and adapt against the impacts of climate change. For example, the Internet of Things (IoT), which we recently launched, is key to saving energy, creating more efficient communities, as well as enabling sectors such as agriculture to be more productive and sustainable.”
Karikari added that Vodacom’s success must not come at the expense of the environment and as such, the company is committed to reducing environmental impact and contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
“On the African continent, climate change disproportionately affects low-income communities. In Mozambique, we have the case of cyclones that have caused damage, as has food insecurity in affected areas. As Vodacom, we believe in the positive impact that access to mobile technology, even the most basic, can have in combating climate change,” he concluded.
