Tmcel Clarifies Strike Situation and Reaffirms Commitment to Dialogue

Tmcel – Moçambique Telecom – released a statement on Monday (20) addressing the recent news about a possible strike announced by some workers. The company reiterated its commitment to dialogue, mutual understanding and compliance with current labour legislation, highlighting efforts to resolve internal concerns and ensure the sustainability of operations.

According to O Económico this Tuesday, 21 January, in the document, Tmcel guarantees that salaries have been paid on time, even in the face of financial difficulties. The company explained that it is implementing a wage harmonisation process, agreed with the Workers’ Committee, which should be completed by March 2025, with the aim of correcting disparities.

Back pay and allowances for 2023 began to be paid in phases in January 2025, depending on the funds available. With regard to the 13th salary for 2024, the company has committed to paying it as soon as financial conditions allow, keeping to the commitment made.

The company also pointed out that although the right to strike is guaranteed, it must follow specific formalities laid down in Law 13/2023 of 25 August. Tmcel said that, in the case of the announced demonstration, the legal procedures, such as the formal consultation of all workers by the Works Council, were not respected. For this reason, the strike is considered illegal.

Management called on workers to use the dialogue and negotiation mechanisms provided for in the Company Agreement and in labour legislation, stressing that demonstrations without the proper legal basis do not contribute to resolving the concerns raised.

Tmcel also reaffirmed its openness to continue working together with the workers, reinforcing the company’s recovery process. According to the statement, the financial indicators show positive signs and the company is on track to guarantee customer satisfaction and fulfil its commitments.

With this position, the telecoms operator says it is seeking to balance its labour responsibilities with financial sustainability, reinforcing its commitment to finding joint solutions that promote operational stability and contribute to the company’s revitalisation.
