Pangolin Logistics has strengthened its operational capacity along the logistics corridor between South Africa and Mozambique with the addition of 10 new DAF trucks, in an investment aimed at improving the efficiency of transporting minerals and other bulk commodities between the two countries, according to Engineering News.
The new fleet, consisting of five DAF XF 480 units and five XF 530 units, is already operating in cross-border tipper services, transporting raw materials from South African mining regions to the Mozambican market. The company has also announced that another five XF 530 trucks are expected to be added in the coming months, continuing its fleet renewal programme.
Founded by Paul Botha, a veteran of the Southern African transport industry, Pangolin Logistics has been expanding its presence in mining-related operations. The company currently transports commodities such as iron ore and chrome from mining areas in Rustenburg, Brits, Steelpoort and Phalaborwa, with Mozambique as a key destination.
According to Botha, the fleet renewal aims to increase operational reliability, reduce costs and improve fuel efficiency—factors seen as critical for profitability in a context of rising logistics cost pressures.
“The main objective is to maximise vehicle uptime and reduce operating costs. Truck reliability has a direct impact on productivity, customer retention and operational continuity,” he said. Fuel efficiency is another key benefit highlighted by the company. According to Botha, the new vehicles have achieved savings of between 80 and 100 litres of diesel per trip, depending on the route and driving style.
The company also highlights improved driver comfort as an important advantage in long-haul operations. The new DAF models feature more spacious cabins equipped with functionalities designed to improve working conditions during extended journeys.
The fleet renewal comes at a time when Southern African logistics corridors are playing an increasingly important role in the export of mineral resources to international markets. The expansion of transport capacity could contribute to greater efficiency in supply chains linking South African mining hubs with Mozambican logistics and port infrastructure.
