The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has revealed that it is investing in modernising and making its services more flexible. To this end, it has signed a contract with Kalmar, a company based in Finland, which supplies heavy materials handling equipment for industrial moulding, ports and terminals, distribution centres, manufacturing and heavy logistics.
According to a statement, the organisation will supply the Port of Maputo with five Kalmar T2i terminal tractors, four Kalmar heavy forklifts, one Kalmar medium forklift and a ‘MyKalmar Insight’ cover for all the units, with delivery of all the machines to be completed by the third quarter of 2025.
The statement specified that the ‘MyKalmar Insight’ performance management tool will help manage the Mozambican port’s fleet operations and identify areas where efficiency can be improved.
‘MPDC holds the concession for the Port of Maputo until 2058 and also acts as the port authority responsible for maritime operations, pilotage, stevedoring, terminal and warehouse operations, as well as planning and development activities. MPDC’s fleet already includes around 60 terminal tractors and Kalmar forklifts,’ the document described.
MPDC’s Maintenance Manager, David Pacule, explained that Kalmar equipment is reliable and that the company provides after-sales assistance, increasing confidence. ‘We’ve been experiencing record volumes in the harbour, and the new Kalmar machines will play a vital role in helping us achieve an even higher production volume in the coming years.’
‘The Kalmar equipment in our fleet has proven to be exceptionally reliable and the after-sales support we receive is first class, so we are very pleased to continue our collaboration,’ he emphasised.

For his part, Byron Meugens, Head of Sales at Kalmar, said that this partnership is in line with the objectives set by his organisation, highlighting its mission to provide innovative and efficient solutions to its customers.
‘We are proud to announce another milestone in our long-standing partnership with MPDC, one of our most valued and long-standing customers in the region. Our strong relationship is founded on mutual respect and trust, underscored by consistent communication and shared goals,’ he emphasised.
‘MPDC’s commitment to excellence aligns perfectly with our mission to provide innovative and efficient solutions. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these new machines will have on MPDC’s operations,’ he concluded.
