M-Pesa and Yango Join Forces to Digitise Transport Payments

Vodafone M-Pesa and Yango Mozambique, part of the global technology group Yango Group, signed a memorandum of understanding in Maputo on Thursday 27 February aimed at facilitating access to digital solutions.

According to a statement from Vodafone M-Pesa, with this partnership, Yango’s drivers and partners will have easier access to M-Pesa’s products and services, including mobile balance, voice and data services, as well as contracting and renewing car insurance, helping to reduce operating costs in Yango’s app-based taxi services.

Through this integration, Yango’s drivers and partners will be able to top up their accounts directly through M-Pesa, guaranteeing fast, secure and fully integrated transactions within Yango’s mobility platform. This development represents a significant step forward in the digitalisation of the country’s transport sector, paving the way for future innovations and improvements in services.

The collaboration between the two companies reinforces their commitment to providing greater convenience, quality and cost savings to operators of app-based transport services, promoting a more efficient and accessible digital ecosystem.

‘We believe that this partnership represents an important milestone in the digitisation of payments in Mozambique, allowing more people to have access to safe and convenient financial solutions. Through this integration, we reaffirm our commitment to providing a service of excellence, ensuring that all users benefit from the efficiency and convenience of M-Pesa,’ said Sérgio Gomes, CEO of Vodafone M-Pesa.

Car insurance from 1,000 meticals per quarter

During his speech, he announced the offer of an affordable car insurance package, with prices starting at 1,000 meticals per quarter for light vehicles and 750 meticals for motorbikes with a car, commonly known as Txopela. This service is the result of a partnership between the Vodafone M-Pesa group and Mozambique Insurance Company, with the aim of providing affordable and comprehensive car insurance, especially for app-based taxi service operators, including additional protection for passengers.

For his part, Mahomed Adam, Yango’s country manager, said: ‘This collaboration represents a crucial moment for both companies and the communities we serve. This MoU is not just a formal agreement, it symbolises our unwavering commitment to improving the mobility experience and integrating essential digital services for our driver partners and their passengers. Aligned with our mission, we aim to drive economic growth and improve living standards in the communities we serve by empowering partner drivers and couriers and facilitating better transport solutions, benefiting society as a whole.’

The document stresses that, in addition to facilitating transactions and access to digital services and products, the initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of both companies to modernising financial and mobility services in the country, contributing to a more digitally inclusive economy.
