The National Social Security Institute (INSS) revealed that taxpayers owed 4.4 billion meticals in 2022. The book value owed corresponded to more than 162,000 taxpayers registered in the system.
According to the 2022 Annual Report, the amount owed includes fines, interest on arrears and the value of cheques returned by banks.
The document states that Mozambican social security revenue increased by 32.7 per cent in 2022, to 21.8 billion meticals, driven by workers’ contributions.
“In 2021, this revenue totalled more than 16.5 billion meticals,” he recalled.
The INSS ended 2022 with more than 162,000 contributors and 2.4 million beneficiaries.
