Maputo province reached a total of 18,441 pensioners between 2015 and May 2024, registering a growth of 142.5% in the number of beneficiaries of the National Social Security Institute (INSS). The figures were announced by the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, during the inauguration of the new INSS delegation building in the district of Magude, held on Monday (16).
According to AIM, Filipe Nyusi pointed out that in 2015 Maputo province had 6,559 taxpayers registered with the social security system. This number had grown to 20,226 by May 2024, which demonstrates a significant increase in adherence to the social protection system, reflecting the strengthening of the coverage and scope of INSS services in the region.
The growth in beneficiaries was also significant. In the same period, the province had 228,655 registered beneficiaries, rising to a total of 512,300, representing an increase of 124 per cent. The head of state emphasised that this increase reflects the sustainable growth of the province’s economy, which has boosted production and, consequently, an increase in the number of taxpayers.
Filipe Nyusi also emphasised the importance of including new professional categories, such as musicians, in the social security system, and called on all citizens with a monthly income to contribute to guarantee their future.
In the district of Magude, where the new INSS building was inaugurated, there are currently 294 contributors, 9117 beneficiaries, 114 self-employed workers and 316 pensioners. The Mozambican President believes that with greater publicity of the advantages of the social security system, these numbers will continue to grow.
The government is committed to expanding the coverage of the INSS, especially in areas with economic potential, such as Magude, with the agricultural sector standing out. Filipe Nyusi also urged the INSS to maintain the values of integrity, ethics, speed, transparency and innovation in the provision of its services.
According to the balance sheet presented, the INSS reached a total of 2,610,356 beneficiaries and 179,797 taxpayers throughout the country in the 2020-24 period, exceeding the targets set for the period, especially among self-employed workers.
