The number of active companies in the country grew by 2.2 per cent in 2023, compared to the previous year, to 91,752, according to data from Mozambique’s National Statistics Institute (INE), Lusa reported .
The organisation’s report reveals that at the end of last year Maputo city alone concentrated 27,263 (29.7%) active companies and establishments, an increase of 3.9% compared to 2022.
Niassa was the fastest growing province in 2023, with 2984 active companies and establishments, an increase of 6.5 per cent in the space of a year. Even so, it is the province with the least movement of companies in the country.
INE also pointed out that in 2023 the number of people working in companies and their establishments reached 902,154 throughout the country, also an increase of 2.2 per cent in the space of a year, of which 346,632 corresponded to Maputo City, equivalent to 38.4 per cent of the total and a year-on-year increase of 1.9 per cent.
On the other hand, Niassa was the province with the fewest workers employed by these companies – 22,513 – despite a 1.9 per cent increase compared to 2022.
Of all the companies counted in the INE study, 211 (0.2 per cent) were public or state-owned, 1,217 (1.3 per cent) were public limited companies and 29,115 (31.7 per cent) were private limited companies. There were also 8,486 (9.2%) sole proprietorships, 52,580 (57.3%) individual entrepreneurs and 52 (0.1%) co-operatives.
