INE: ‘Mozambique Had 925 Large Companies in 2023’

According to an INE report, large companies – those with more than 100 workers or whose annual turnover exceeds 160 million meticals – were concentrated essentially in Maputo city (504) and Maputo province (160), in the south.

The provinces of Niassa, in the north, and Inhambane, in the south, had the fewest large companies in the country at the end of 2023, with seven each.

However, compared to the previous year – 919 large companies – almost half of the provinces registered an increase in the number of people working in large companies in 2023. Maputo province recorded the largest positive variation (5.5 per cent), while Niassa (-23.6 per cent), Tete (-15.2 per cent), Cabo Delgado (-2.5 per cent) and Zambézia (-0.1 per cent) recorded negative variations, INE points out.

The document also states that ‘in 2023, the number of people employed by large companies was 222,459, an increase of 2.8 per cent compared to 2022’.

The majority (30.8%) of large companies operating in Mozambique at the end of 2023 were engaged in wholesale and retail trade or the repair of motor vehicles and motorbikes, followed by manufacturing (15.5%) and the transport and storage sector (11.5%).
