Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), located in Tete province, has announced that in 2025 it will contribute approximately 18 billion meticals to the state coffers. This amount, equivalent to around 300 million US dollars, is the result of the company’s positive performance in the energy sector and reinforces its role as one of the country’s main sources of revenue, according to Rádio Moçambique (RM).
HCB has been an important contributor to the state coffers. In 2023, it stood out as the company that paid the most dividends, with a value of 4.6 billion meticals, representing an increase of 42.5 per cent on the previous year and making up 50 per cent of the dividends paid by the state business sector. In addition to these, the company contributed significantly in other areas, including a concession fee of 2.3 billion meticals in 2023, a growth of 37.8 per cent compared to 2022.
The hydroelectric plant also played a crucial role in concession revenues, accounting for 34.8 per cent of that category. In terms of taxes, in 2022 the company paid 5.1 billion meticals, highlighting its weight in the national economy. By 2025, the forecast contribution of 18 billion meticals demonstrates the company’s continued rise and its relevance to the country’s economic development.
The distribution of HCB’s concession fee was recently changed, with 70 per cent of the amount collected going to the State Budget. This change further strengthens the company’s role as a crucial source of revenue for the government, ensuring that the funds generated by hydroelectric operations are channelled into the country’s development.
According to the chairman of HCB’s board of directors, Tomás Matola, the company is not only contributing financially, but is also committed to the social development of local communities.
‘HCB supports education by building schools, buying desks and various other supports. In the health sector, we contribute to the construction of hospitals and health centres. At the end of last year, we inaugurated a [health centre] in the district of Mueda, in the province of Cabo Delgado, among other support that includes the acquisition of equipment and the equipping of these units,’ he revealed.
