The PCA of the Competition Regulatory Authority (ARC), Iacumba Aiuba, said that the government should find solutions to end the monopoly of the Importadora Moçambicana de Petróleos (IMOPETRO) in importing fuel into the country.
Aiuba argued that in Mozambique there are other companies interested in importing fuel, but they are barred from doing so due to the monopoly held by the Mozambican Oil Importer (IMOPETRO).
According to the PCA, there are legal instruments that were approved in a certain context, but are currently outdated, due to the dynamics of the economy, especially in the fuel sector.
The position was expressed this Thursday, October 6, during a seminar on “Promoting and defending healthy competition, for the public interest in the private and public sectors in Mozambique,” promoted by the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) and the Competition Regulatory Authority (ARC).
IMOPETRO is an entity with legal personality, patrimonial and financial autonomy, created by the Government under decree 1/97, to be the exclusive agent for the import of liquid and gaseous fuels in Mozambique.
