The public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) reports an estimated loss of 10 million meticals (around 157,000 dollars) due to the damage caused by Severe Tropical Storm “Filipo” as it passed through the southern province of Inhambane, the Mozambican Information Agency reported on Friday, 15 March.
According to the agency, the storm knocked down 73 medium- and low-voltage grid posts, covering 3.5 kilometres, leaving around 113,000 of the company’s customers without power.
EDM’s director for Customer Service in Inhambane, Fenias Dimande, said that investment was being made to repair the damage caused by Storm Filipo. “Some work is continuing in Morrumbene. Of course, there is still some work on the low-voltage network, but the work is still going on in the Ninganinga and Mata areas, where around 1,500 customers are still without power,” said the source.
The official appealed to Electricidade de Moçambique customers to take precautionary measures in view of the existence of poles and cables still on the ground.
Tropical Storm Filipo entered Mozambique on Tuesday (12) from the district of Inhassoro, in the southern province of Inhambane, with wind gusts of between 90 and 130 kilometres per hour and heavy rain.
During its journey through national territory, “Filipo” devastated the coastal districts of Mozambique’s southern provinces.
