The Competition Regulatory Authority (ARC) has adopted a decision not to oppose, but with conditions, the intention of the company Petróleos de Moçambique (Petromoc) to acquire 50% of BP Moçambique’s capital in the corporate structure of Maputo International Airport Fuelling Services (MIAFS).
In a statement released this Monday, September 18, by ARC, it is said that “Petromoc will place itself in a dominant position, which could lead to obstacles to free competition, since a significant part of the aviation fuel storage infrastructure in Maputo will be under the control of a single operator”.
In view of this dominant position, according to the note, “ARC has decided to condition Petromoc to cede 50% of its stake in MIAFS, within a period of no more than one year, with the aim of making the aviation fuel storage market less concentrated, which will lead to more competitive prices and the possibility of choosing the into-plane supply company, in order to ensure that effective competition is maintained”.
The intention to sell BP Moçambique’s share to Petromoc was announced by ARC last July, with a notification of the “concentration of companies” operation that was still subject to public evaluation.
This is confirmation of BP’s exit from the Mozambican fuel market, after selling the retail business to TotalEnergies in 2021.
