A total of 1,075 companies had suspended activity by the end of 2020, affected by the covid-19 pandemic, the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) announced today.
“The year will have ended with about 1,075 companies totally closed due to covid-19” across the country, said Maria Abdula, vice president of CTA.
The confederation states that the number represents an improvement over the situation in August last year, when “the number of companies seriously affected by the pandemic and that suspended activities amounted to about 4,300” – mostly in the hospitality sector.
“Since September, with the easing of restrictions, a large number of companies have begun to reopen, which has reduced this number to less than 25%” of what it was, i.e. to 1,075 in December.
The data were disclosed during the presentation of a commission to advise the government and the scientific commission that follows covid-19 in the country, “on aspects that affect the business sector and propose possible measures for their mitigation.
The commission will pay special attention to measures to support the treasury of companies, review the requirements for the licensing of private clinics and hospitals, establish mechanisms for cooperation and articulation with the government, among others.
Mozambique counts 711 deaths and 63,645 cases, of which 76% recovered and 166 hospitalized (mostly in Maputo), according to data from the Ministry of Health.
