President Daniel Chapo has highlighted that Mozambique has gone 11 months without recording a single kidnapping case, describing the milestone as an important signal of strengthened security and stability in the country.
The announcement was made at the Praça dos Heróis Moçambicanos during celebrations marking Victory Day. According to the head of state, Mozambique has recorded no kidnapping incidents since 7 October 2024, a result he attributed to work carried out by authorities in combating crime.
Chapo argued that security is an essential precondition for economic development, stressing that it is impossible to attract investment, increase production, or establish new industrial units in an environment defined by fear and instability. “We cannot build factories where there is insecurity. We cannot increase production where there is fear. We cannot attract investment where there is no stability,” he said.
The president added that the government intends to ensure conditions under which citizens and investors can live, work, and conduct economic activities safely across the entire national territory.
Despite the kidnapping-free period, Chapo warned that criminal networks continue to attempt to organise actions against citizens, pledging that authorities will not retreat in the fight against this type of crime. “It has been 11 months without a single kidnapping in the country. It has not been easy, because the kidnapping industry attempts, in various ways, to engineer criminal actions against honest, upright, and hardworking citizens,” he declared.
The head of state also reiterated the government’s commitment to combating other crimes that undermine stability and the economy, including terrorism, money laundering, and drug trafficking.
According to Chapo, consolidating peace, security, and stability is critical to creating a favourable environment for investment and economic development in Mozambique.
