Workation: What is It and How Does It Differ from Remote Working?

Workation is a concept that combines remote working with travel. The word is a portmanteau of “work” and “vacation,” which sums up the aim of this practice: to combine productivity with the opportunity to visit unforgettable places.

An example of a “workation” is when a company offers a remote employee the opportunity to travel, combining their professional obligations with moments of leisure, rest, and relaxation.

It is important to understand that “workation” and remote work are not synonymous. The former exists within the latter, as a way of allowing employees to break out of their routine and enjoy more leisure time in a different location.

Thus, the professional fulfills their tasks within a period previously agreed upon with management and then enjoys the city where they are.

Many workers are afraid to take long vacations because they think they will “slow down” their professional pace. With a “workation,” it is possible to visit that place they have always dreamed of without sacrificing productivity.

Who can take a “workation”?

A “workation” must be agreed upon between the company and the employee. Technically, anyone can benefit, but it is more common among those who already work remotely.

It is especially suitable for creative professionals or those who need to concentrate, such as programmers. A pleasant environment with a good view and a peaceful atmosphere helps the mind to calm down and maintain a steady pace of work.
