Five Tips to Stay Relevant in the Job Market

The concept of “lifelong learning” emerged decades ago as a necessity in response to increasing population longevity and rapid technological evolution, and it has become increasingly important in a constantly changing world.

The report by French professor Jacques Delors, presented to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), considers lifelong learning as one of the keys to accessing the 21st century and argues that the concept has four essential pillars: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be. Thais Requito, a specialist in human development, sustainable productivity, and founder of ReskillLab (a consultancy offering training, mentoring, and experiences for companies wanting to evolve their culture), says that as technology takes over functions previously performed by humans, especially in operational areas, skill gaps arise that need to be filled for professionals to remain relevant in the job market.

“I believe that, in a world where professions are constantly changing, continuous learning has become essential, not only so people can adapt to changes but also to ensure everyone has the opportunity to evolve in their career paths, regardless of their starting point. I see lifelong learning capacity as more than just a current trend: it is definitely a strategic necessity for the future,” she explains.

Here are five practical tips to integrate continuous learning into your routine, according to Thais Requito.

  1. Make Learning Part of the Organizational Culture
The main barrier companies face in encouraging continuous learning is the lack of a culture oriented toward it. “Instead of seeing learning as a one-time activity — like a course to adapt to a new system — it is important to incorporate it into employees’ daily lives. Encouraging a psychologically safe environment, where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process, helps create a space where innovation can flourish,” she comments.
  2. Integrate Learning into Your Routine Without Overloading Yourself
One of the main concerns about lifelong learning is the risk of increasing stress and guilt from not managing to “keep up” with yet another activity. “Regarding this, I firmly believe the key is to focus on quality, not quantity. Instead of taking multiple courses, invest in deep sessions that truly add value to your development. Practices like shadowing (following a mentor) or more personalized mentoring can be efficient alternatives, promoting continuous learning in a more natural and lighter way,” adds Thais Requito.
  3. Prioritize Learning Relevant to Your Development
“Anxiety-driven learning” — studying just for the sake of it without a clear purpose — can be harmful. “I believe the foundation of this is self-knowledge and self-awareness. Instead of trying to absorb any content, professionals should start reflecting on their knowledge gaps and direct their efforts toward areas that will genuinely contribute to their growth. Knowing yourself, your gaps, interests, and goals directs purposeful learning. Where are you now, and where do you want to evolve?”
  4. Explore Different Forms of Learning Beyond Traditional Ones
Personal and professional growth is not limited to formal courses or training. “Peer exchanges, reading, discussion groups, and mentoring are very effective ways to acquire new knowledge. Additionally, conducting pilot projects or volunteer groups within the company can provide hands-on learning and directly apply new knowledge, encouraging more collaborative development,” says Thais Requito.
  5. Lead by Example — Show That Learning Is a Priority
Increasingly, leadership plays a crucial role in creating a culture of continuous learning. “Leaders who admit their own vulnerabilities and share their learning processes inspire their teams to do the same. Furthermore, by viewing employees’ mistakes as part of the growth process — as learning opportunities rather than punishments — leaders promote a safer, more open environment for everyone’s professional development,” explains the specialist.

Learning Keeps Professionals Relevant

In a world where technology advances far faster than our own evolutionary capacity, continuous learning is what keeps us relevant as professionals and human beings.

“Lifelong learning” isn’t about collecting certificates but about cultivating curiosity, a sense of purpose, and the courage to keep moving forward, even amid uncertainties. Continuous learning is the fuel for building more human, adaptable, and creative workplaces,” concludes Thais Requito.
