Balancing Effort and Accuracy

A common problem is devoting more effort than necessary to various tasks. We know that investing more time increases the likelihood of good results, but the key is to match the effort to the desired quality.

In the context of decision-making, this is known as the trade-off between effort and accuracy. If you’re buying a new car, it makes sense to invest time in analyzing reviews, taking test drives, and weighing your options.

On the other hand, if you’re choosing a chocolate bar, you don’t need to overthink it.

The problem with investing excessive effort in unimportant decisions is that you’re wasting a limited resource that might be needed for truly relevant decisions. Try simplifying some of the less important choices. If you remain satisfied with the results, you can stick with this more practical approach.

The Power of Habits

Habits are automatic behaviors that directly link a situation to an action, eliminating the need to make a decision.

When you act out of habit, your behavior becomes routine and predictable, reducing mental effort. This way, you stop wasting energy on decisions that can already be resolved automatically.

Postpone to Decide Better

When you feel exhausted, allow yourself to postpone the final decision whenever possible. You can move forward with part of the process—analyzing options, forming preferences—but avoid deciding at that moment.

Instead, “sleep on it.” Step away and revisit the decision with a fresher mind. When reviewing the options, you may confirm your choices or identify aspects you hadn’t considered before.

This is especially important when the decision requires further research. Fatigue can cause you to overlook important details simply because you’re tired.

When you revisit the issue the next day, you’ll be better able to invest the necessary effort, which is essential for complex decisions.
