Discover (and Adopt) the Four Morning Habits Successful People Have in Common

Although they work in different fields, successful people tend to share certain traits. From CEOs to Olympic athletes and entrepreneurs, they all incorporate the same healthy habits into their morning routines, according to Fast Company magazine.

The way you start your morning affects your productivity and mood throughout the rest of the day. If you wake up reactively—prioritizing emails, phone calls, and rushing out the door—chances are the rest of your day will continue to be stressful and chaotic. However, if instead you choose to dedicate time to healthy habits, you’re likely to experience more energy and vitality, leading to calmer, more controlled days and, as a result, better outcomes. These five tips can make a difference:

  1. Set the Tone for the Day

This is the first rule for success. Being organized and establishing how you want your day to go helps ensure you don’t forget something important or mismanage your time—creating a sense of calm and control. Waking up at your planned time is key to making the most of your morning and avoiding a rushed start, which will help you feel more at ease. Taking deep, calm breaths before starting your day energizes your body, oxygenates your brain, and helps regulate your morning rhythm. A deep breath not only calms the nervous system but also initiates a relaxation response.

  1. Engage in Physical Activity

Doing at least 20 minutes of physical activity—such as a brisk walk, run, cycling, swimming, yoga, or any other exercise that gets your body moving—is beneficial not only for your cardiovascular and physical health but also for your mental well-being. This habit also contributes to better sleep at night. After your morning workout or walk, it’s important to find a moment of calm, which can be achieved through mindful meditation for two, five, or ten minutes. This moment may be the only chance for introspection during your day and can help you gain clarity and remain calm under pressure at work.

  1. Connect with Your Brain Positively

After practicing stillness, it’s useful to map out and set positive intentions for the day. Reviewing your task list is essential so your brain is aligned with your daily responsibilities. Defining two or three key tasks and setting positive intentions helps everything flow more smoothly.

  1. Nourish Your Body and Mind with a Healthy Breakfast

Regardless of where you eat breakfast, this is a key part of your routine that should not be overlooked. Nourishing your body—instead of just having coffee and rushing out the door—can make a big difference in your day. Your body needs fuel, and so does your brain, which consumes about 50% of the available glucose.

Consider waking up earlier so you can prepare yourself calmly—it can have significant benefits. People often argue it’s better to sleep for another half hour, but avoiding a rushed morning routine has a major impact on your system and helps regulate your daily and life rhythm.

You don’t need to adopt all these habits at once if they’re not currently part of your routine. You can introduce them gradually and mindfully. Once you’ve made one change, you can move on to the next—step by step.
