The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) announced that at least 40 Mozambican entrepreneurs will visit China this month with the goal of strengthening business relations and exploring investment opportunities in the energy and mining sectors.
“We will travel to China from the 27th to the 28th of this month. Our delegation includes 40 businesspeople interested in strengthening and deepening relations between the two countries,” said CTA President Álvaro Massingue, speaking to the press on the sidelines of a meeting with Chinese entrepreneurs held in Maputo.
According to Massingue, the meeting between Mozambican and Chinese business representatives served to highlight existing business opportunities in Mozambique open to Chinese investment, stressing that it is important to encourage Chinese companies to engage more directly with the national private sector.
“We have seen that Chinese companies tend to focus on doing business with the Government. We need to ‘draw them in’ to also do business directly with the private sector, because that’s where job opportunities will emerge, income will increase, and the State will benefit from higher tax revenues,” Massingue emphasized.
Mozambique’s exports to China rose by 12.2% in the first five months of 2025, reaching 45.7 billion meticais (USD 720 million), according to data released on Thursday, June 26, by the Chinese Customs Service. The figures show that Mozambique stood out as one of the few positive exceptions among Portuguese-speaking countries, in a context of sharp declines in exports to the Chinese market.
In total, Portuguese-speaking countries exported 3 trillion meticais (USD 47.6 billion) to China between January and May, representing an 18.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. This marks the lowest figure for the first five months of the year since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global trade.
