The Bank of Mozambique’s (“BoM”) statistical report revealed that the value of tobacco exports fell 25 per cent to 49.3 million dollars in the first nine months of 2023.
According to the document, in the same period in 2022, exports of the product earned the country more than 66.4 million dollars, emphasising that the drop in value in 2023 was due to various internal and external factors.
According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report released in 2023, Mozambique has the 8th largest tobacco-growing area in the world, with around 91.4 thousand hectares.
Generally speaking, the BdM pointed out that in the same period, Mozambique’s trade deficit fell 86.7 per cent to 634.4 million dollars, influenced by the drop in imports.
