Operational Issues Prompt LAM to Reschedule Maputo-Inhambane Flights

Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) has rescheduled flights between Maputo and Inhambane Province, originally scheduled for Sunday, to today, Monday (27), due to technical and operational constraints, the state-owned carrier said in a statement.

According to the company, the change affects domestic flights in the southern part of the country, and it assured that passengers will be contacted individually with updated information on the new schedules.

“The company is contacting all affected customers to accommodate their needs and minimize the inconveniences resulting from this situation. LAM sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused,” the statement said.

This is not an isolated case. On February 27, LAM had already rescheduled a flight to Johannesburg, South Africa, also for technical and operational reasons, and at the time postponed the announcement of the new schedules.

Currently, the company operates a fleet of seven aircraft and has been facing structural limitations for several years due to reduced operational capacity and insufficient investment. Industry experts have pointed to weaknesses in aircraft maintenance as one of the factors contributing to reported incidents—albeit without casualties—which are putting pressure on the reliability of the service.

This latest development comes just days after the airline itself acknowledged the possibility of raising ticket prices in response to rising fuel costs, amid an international context marked by instability in the Middle East.

Although it assured, at the time, that it had a 30-day fuel supply buffer and would maintain all routes, LAM acknowledged that changes in energy prices could affect its cost structure and, consequently, its fare policy, highlighting the company’s operational vulnerability to external shocks and reinforcing existing challenges regarding the sustainability and reliability of its service.
