LAM Launches Three Weekly Flights to Malawi

Mozambique Airlines (LAM) will soon be flying from Maputo to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, with three weekly flights, a source from the Mozambican state carrier told Lusa today.

The same source did not give a specific date for the start of the operation, but the company has already started a campaign to publicise the new regional link, guaranteeing that the route will connect “two vibrant cities, promoting stronger ties and making travelling more accessible”.

In December, LAM launched a new regional route to Cape Town, South Africa, and an intercontinental route to Lisbon, and plans to launch connections to Brazil, China and India in 2024.

“It’s a possibility and it’s in our strategic plan, next year [2024], to operate at least two to three intercontinental destinations [in addition to Lisbon],” said LAM’s commercial director, Firmino Naftal, speaking to journalists at Cape Town’s international airport on the flight’s debut on 12 December.

In 2024, LAM’s plan is to launch flights from Maputo to São Paulo (Brazil), Mumbai (India) and Guangzhou (China), according to the company’s commercial director.

At the same time, he added, LAM already has a team in Malawi to start flights between the two countries in the coming weeks, given the demand already identified in the neighbouring country.
