The lack of market in the civil aviation sector is dictating the delay in the acquisition, by the company Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), of three aircraft under the purchase contract initialled with US manufacturer Boeing.
It should be noted that, in order to increase its supply and consequently meet market demand, LAM made official in May 2014, the agreement to acquire the Boeing aircraft. However, the director general of the national airline, João Pó Jorge said that “the acquisition is purposely delayed, since the company does not yet have the market to operate with the aircraft.”
“To operate an aircraft like this, which is worth between US$80 and US$120 million, it is necessary to have a market, with guaranteed income, which is why we are delaying its purchase,” João Pó Jorge told reporters in Maputo on Tuesday.
The director general of LAM also referred to the debt that the company carries from the past, estimated at around US$230 million, as reported in the reports and accounts available on the company’s website and which are the result of commitments to banks, domestic and foreign suppliers.
