The Mozambican Airlines (LAM) canceled flights to the provinces of Niassa and Nampula in northern Mozambique on Sunday, December 28, due to bad weather affecting Lichinga, the provincial capital of Niassa.
In a statement released the same day, the national carrier clarified that flight TM190, which connected Nampula to Lichinga, did not take place due to adverse meteorological conditions in the city, including heavy rain and low visibility.
Passengers traveling from Maputo to Lichinga had to return to the country’s capital and were accommodated according to the procedures established for such situations, until the resumption of flights, scheduled for December 30, 2025.
Regarding other affected routes, LAM explained that passengers were informed in advance about the impossibility of the flights, as weather conditions were not yet safe enough for air operations.
“The company regrets the inconvenience caused by adverse weather conditions beyond its control and reaffirms its commitment to operating flights only when all operational safety standards are fully ensured,” the LAM statement emphasized.
Meanwhile, Mozambican authorities have activated preventive measures in response to the risk of floods, following alerts of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds expected in the coming days in five provinces in the central and northern regions of the country.
According to a statement from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction, the sector’s technical council recommended, among other actions, the activation of district emergency operations centers and increased dissemination of warnings to the population through local committees, community radios, provincial stations, and other local media.
The National Institute of Meteorology also issued warnings for moderate to heavy rainfall, with precipitation estimated between 30 and 50 millimeters in 24 hours, until Monday, in the provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado, and Niassa.
