Kenyan airline Kenya Airways will resume direct connections between Nairobi and Maputo this Wednesday, 19 June, four years after their suspension, in order to “boost” socio-economic development, the company Aeroportos de Moçambique (ADM) announced today (18).
“This resumption marks a significant strategic step in ADM’s ongoing efforts to strengthen air connectivity and boost the country’s socio-economic development,” reads a statement from the company to which Lusa had access.
Flights between the capitals of the two countries will operate three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, according to the Kenyan company, one of the largest on the African continent, with a hub in Nairobi.
“This flight will facilitate greater movement of people and goods, creating new opportunities for trade, investment and co-operation between Mozambique and Kenya, as well as other parts of East Africa,” says ADM.
“This direct connection by Kenya Airways will allow a more efficient flow of goods between Nairobi and Maputo, reducing logistical costs and transport time,” explains the statement from the state-owned company, adding that “Mozambican companies will have faster access to international markets, strengthening supply chains and increasing competitiveness.”
The state company that manages the airports emphasises that this connection will also promote Mozambique’s tourism potential: “the direct flight will facilitate the arrival of tourists from Kenya and other destinations connected by Nairobi, promoting Mozambique as an attractive tourist destination”.
In August 2020, Kenya Airways announced the suspension of flights to Maputo, as part of a restructuring of routes in the post-covid-19 pandemic period, which also included the interruption of connections to Luanda, the capital of Angola.
