This Tuesday (11), Mozambique Airlines (LAM) announced the resumption of domestic flights to the north of the country after the weather conditions improved following the passage of severe tropical storm Jude.
Flights to Pemba, Lichinga and Nacala, which had been cancelled due to the strong winds and heavy rain caused by the storm, have resumed operations. According to a statement from LAM, flights have now been cancelled on the Maputo/Pemba/Maputo routes, with an extension to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Maputo/Nampula/Lichinga and Maputo/Nacala/Maputo.
The airline assures that it will continue to monitor the weather conditions to guarantee the safety of operations and prevent any further interruptions.
The passage of tropical storm Jude left several damages to infrastructure and essential services in the north of the country. National Road Number One (N1), one of the country’s main motorways, was cut off in the Anchilo checkpoint area, in Nampula province, due to the increased volume of rainwater.
In addition, the storm caused a blackout that affected more than 400,000 customers in Nampula province, according to information from Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). In the city of Nampula alone, 135,000 consumers were left without a power supply, while in Angoche and Nacala the number totalled 433,000 affected customers.
Mozambique has been in the middle of the rainy season since October, and has already seen other extreme weather events in recent months. In December, the country was hit by cyclone Chido, which killed at least 75 people.
LAM and the authorities have made it known that they are continuing to monitor the evolution of weather conditions in order to guarantee the safety of passengers and minimise the impact of bad weather on air traffic.
