Air passenger traffic will fall by about 60 percent by 2020 to 2003 lows on the impact of the covid-19 pandemic, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced today.
“ICAO’s analysis reveals that global passenger traffic has fallen dramatically by about 60%,” advanced ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano, who was speaking at ‘Aviation Day’, an initiative organized by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC), as part of the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union.
According to the data released this Monday, 2.7 billion passengers were thus registered in 2020, down from the 4.5 billion totaled in the previous year.
“This takes the global travel data to 2003 levels,” he pointed out.
However, Salvatore Sciacchitano noted that the “severity of the pandemic’s impact on aviation” also gives the sector an “incredible opportunity” to evolve, betting on green innovations and the adoption of digital solutions.
