Algerian carrier Air Algérie plans to launch regular flights between Algiers and Maputo from January 2027, as part of a bilateral air services agreement signed this week aimed at boosting passenger mobility, trade flows, and economic ties between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, and Algeria’s Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud. The Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Logistics confirmed the deal in a statement cited by Portuguese news agency Lusa.
“With this instrument, Mozambique and Algeria have given new impetus to bilateral cooperation with the signing of the Air Services Agreement, an instrument that paves the way for strengthening connectivity between the two countries, the development of transport infrastructure and the creation of new opportunities for cooperation in the aviation, logistics and transport sectors,” the ministry’s statement read.
According to the Mozambican government, strengthening air connectivity and developing transport infrastructure forms part of a broader strategy to bring the two economies closer together, encourage private investment, facilitate trade, and advance the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
As part of the bilateral cooperation framework, Ministers Matlombe and Sayoud also agreed to move forward with specific instruments to support studies for the development of the Nacala Corridor — a strategic rail infrastructure designed to strengthen regional links between the Port of Nacala, Malawi, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A further agreement provides for the training of Mozambican technicians in Algeria, covering areas including port management, instructor training for Mozambique’s Civil Aviation Academy, capacity building for maritime authority officials, and skills development in the logistics sector.
Minister Matlombe said Mozambique intends to deepen cooperation with other African countries through partnerships that promote economic growth, regional and continental integration, and the creation of sustainable development opportunities for the populations of both nations.
In September 2025, President Daniel Chapo visited Algeria, during which he called for the establishment of direct air links between African countries as a means of reducing dependence on routes transiting outside the continent and facilitating tourism, trade, and logistics across Africa.
