“Wheat Price May Rise in the Next Days” – MIC

The Minister of Industry and Commerce (MIC) reiterated that as long as the war between Russia and Ukraine does not stop, the price of wheat may continue to rise, especially in Mozambique. However, Silvino Moreno points out that the government continues to seek alternatives to avoid high costs.

The war between Russia and Ukraine reveals that part of the largest exporters of wheat in the world could impact the price of this cereal in Mozambique. Recently, Ukraine said it has more than 20 million tons of grain whose export is blocked in ports.

Silvino Moreno, quoted by O País, explained that the margins to avoid the cost of wheat are few, since importers report price variations and always with a tendency to rise, because of the prevalence of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“There were, until last month, stocks of wheat, mainly for bread production. Those stocks will run out and the next ones will be obtained by new prices. We have no way to escape,” clarified the Minister of Industry and Trade, Silvino Moreno. The governor points to the consumption of alternative products as one of the solutions to the problem.

“Bread is not the everyday food. We have other foods, like cassava and sweet potato. We need to look at that, invest in these products, and encourage people to make use of domestic products,” Moreno explained.

The initiative aims to change Mozambique from a producer and exporter of unprocessed goods to a producer and exporter of value-added products.

The Minister of Industry and Trade warned weeks ago that the stock of wheat covered consumption until this June, but that the government would continue to seek solutions to the problem, especially to prevent a worsening of the price of this cereal much used in the production of one of the most essential foods in families, bread.
