US Invests $5.5M in Support Programs for Small Farmers in Gaza

The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has launched two programs to improve the responsiveness and resilience of Mozambican farmers to climate shocks and stresses.

Running for two years, the programs will be implemented in coordination with local and provincial government authorities, with the aim of improving agricultural productivity, diversifying economic opportunities, and strengthening early warning and action systems in Gaza province communities affected by disasters and weather-related problems.

USAID will invest $5.5 million in these two programs over the next two years. Support for disaster recovery and resilience programs, designed to meet the immediate needs of affected communities and build resilience for future emergencies, are critical components of the U.S. Government’s broader assistance in Mozambique.

Looking primarily at women and young farmers, as they are the groups with the least access to agricultural resources and services, the first program, the Farmer Resilience and Rebuilding Initiative, supports 4,400 smallholder farmers in the Chókwe and Guijá districts by running farmer growing schools with a curriculum tailored to the local context, and creating a network of rural entrepreneurs who advise farmers on topics ranging from business management to the use of water-smart technologies.

In addition, the training stresses the importance of how sharing responsibilities and decision-making between women and men can increase incomes. The program, implemented by iDE, also develops voucher-based seed and technology fairs to better connect remote farmers with agro-dealers.

In parallel, the Initiative to Promote Resilience through Women’s Empowerment, implemented by Save The Children, provides training to farmers in sustainable production practices that enrich soil, protect crops, and improve the quality and quantity of yields. The program also supports village-based savings and lending groups to increase smallholder farmers’ access to finance.

Additionally, the program works with district officials and community leaders to develop early action plans that protect crops, fields and livestock before disasters strike. These activities will benefit about 75 communities in Gaza province, reaching more than 54,000 Mozambicans.
