In 2023, the tobacco industry grew by 23%, totalling around 4.4 billion meticals. This performance contrasts with the 3.6 billion meticals achieved in 2022.

According to the report drawn up by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and released on Friday 22 March by Lusa, in the 2022-23 agricultural cycle, the country had a tobacco growing area covering 76,800 hectares, resulting in a production of 65,800 tonnes.

The document emphasises that Mozambique has the eighth largest cultivation area in the world, with 91,400 hectares, and is also the third largest producer in Africa, after Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Recently, the Bank of Mozambique (BoM) revealed that the value of tobacco exports fell by 25 per cent to 49.3 million dollars in the first nine months of 2023.
