Serbia has expressed interest in deepening cooperation with Mozambique across the agriculture and industry sectors, as part of a bilateral initiative to broaden relations between the two countries beyond their longstanding political and diplomatic ties.
The intention was signalled during a working visit to Serbia by Mozambican Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi, who attended a commemorative summit marking the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement.
According to newspaper O País, agriculture is among the priority areas in which Serbia is seeking to strengthen its engagement with Mozambique. The prospective partnership could also extend to the industrial sector, including the defence industry, as well as other areas of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Levi said both countries intend to leverage their historical relationship to reinforce economic and commercial cooperation. "This is an opportunity to re-establish those relations and move into other areas of cooperation, such as trade and others," she said.
Education and training have also been identified as a key area of engagement. Serbia indicated its readiness to increase the number of scholarships available to Mozambican citizens. Currently, seven Mozambican students are enrolled at Serbian institutions.
To translate intentions into concrete initiatives, Mozambique and Serbia are expected to establish joint working groups tasked with identifying sectors of greatest potential and defining implementation mechanisms.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1975, though cooperation in recent years has remained concentrated primarily in the political and diplomatic sphere.
Despite those longstanding ties, bilateral trade remains limited. Data from Serbia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs show that goods trade between the two countries totalled just €1.5 million in 2025, of which €1.2 million corresponded to Serbian imports from Mozambique.
On the Serbian side, the intergovernmental meeting also identified energy, construction, information technology, and tourism as sectors with potential for expanded cooperation, broadening the range of possible partnerships between the two countries.
