Mozambique projects significant growth in livestock production in 2023 as a result of the implementation of prophylactic measures to prevent animal diseases and genetic improvement programs for livestock.
According to the information contained in the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE – 2023), a production of more than 187 thousand tons of meat is foreseen, which, according to the document, represents an overall growth of 2% if compared to the more than 183 thousand tons available in 2022.
In fact, the PESOE advances that the sector of agriculture and rural development has the goal of placing on the national market more than 20 thousand tons of beef and 158 thousand tons of chicken, thus reducing the dependence on imports.
“With regard to the evolution of livestock, it is projected to grow by 6% for cattle, 2% for pigs, 5% for small ruminants, in addition to 6% for landim chickens,” details the document.
PESOE estimates indicate that the number of cattle heads will reach 2.4 million in 2023, 1.7 million pigs and more than 23 million chickens.
For the government, the progress in meat production should guide and inspire the vision of the agriculture and rural development sector, in a strategy to build a more efficient livestock sector that generates wealth.
Mozambique is positioned as the second largest producer of chicken meat in Africa, with 158 thousand tons annually.
The Economic and Social Plan and the State Budget (PESOE – 2023) was approved on December 9th last year by the Assembly of the Republic.
