The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mozambique recently conducted an exploratory mission to Gorongosa National Park in Sofala province to assess its sustainable coffee production model, which could be integrated into the implementation of the Green Value for Growth (GV4G) program, valued at €60 million.
The visit took place within the framework of the Mozambique–European Union Global Gateway Business Forum 2026 and the signing ceremony of the Green Value for Growth (GV4G) program, funded by the European Union and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mozambique (EKN). Following the event held on June 9–10, an exploratory mission traveled on June 12 to the provinces of Manica and Sofala.
The delegation, composed of 11 representatives from the Netherlands and led by Marchel Gerrmann, Ambassador for Trade and Director of Sustainable Economic Development of the Netherlands, visited Gorongosa National Park with a particular focus on the coffee production value chain.
The mission is part of preparations for the implementation of the Green Value for Growth program, which aims to strengthen three strategic value chains in Mozambique—soy, cashew nuts, and coffee—along the Beira and Nacala corridors. The program seeks to promote sustainable economic growth, attract European investment, and create opportunities for around 38,000 producers and 3,500 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.
During the visit to Serra da Gorongosa, the delegation observed how agroforestry systems are transforming local communities’ livelihoods through coffee production grown under the shade of native trees, an approach that helps conserve soils, water resources, and biodiversity.
Dutch representatives also held meetings with local producers and visited the Gorongosa coffee processing unit, where they followed the different stages of product preparation for the market. “Gorongosa shows that it is possible to produce high-quality coffee, protect the forest, and generate income for communities,” said one participant in the mission.
According to the organizers, the visit helped deepen understanding of the practical functioning of the coffee production model implemented in Gorongosa, assess its productive, economic, and commercial performance, and gather direct feedback from farmers on the main challenges and opportunities in the sector.
The mission also contributed to a better understanding of the potential for scaling and replicating this model in other regions of the country, identifying investment opportunities and exploring future strategic partnerships for the development of Mozambique’s coffee value chain.
