Mozambique to Stop Importing Animal Feed from Malawi

The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, announced on Friday (25th), in the district headquarters of Gurúè, in Zambézia Province, that the country will stop importing animal feed, chickens, and eggs from neighboring Malawi.

The announcement was made shortly after a visit to an animal feed factory in Gurúè. The President also stated that the factory will supply the northern region of the country, including Nampula, Cabo Delgado, and Niassa.

“This will allow the development of poultry farming in the northern region of our country, especially broiler and layer chicken production, and egg production,” he said, as quoted by AIM.

The animal feed factory is the result of an investment under the National Industrialization Program (PRONAI), implemented by the government through the Ministry of Economy.

“This strategic investment will support a distribution chain focused on resellers and traders operating throughout the northern region. Our goal is to ensure that poultry and egg production in this region becomes a sustainable and competitive reality,” he said.

In addition to producing feed, the Gurúè factory will offer farmers in Zambézia Province the opportunity to supply raw materials and generate income.

“This factory is being managed by professionals with the involvement of the private sector. The investment is state-owned, and this model allows us to move forward,” Chapo revealed.

The President also highlighted that the workforce consists of young Mozambicans, emphasizing that this is the generation for whom the government is building a new economy—one that generates dignified employment.

“These young people are working here today with pride in this industrial unit. They represent the future we want for Mozambique—a future with real opportunities for the youth, grounded in commitment, hard work, and innovation,” he said.
