Mozambique will import chicken from Brazil and Turkey to alleviate supply shortages following the ban on poultry products from neighbouring South Africa, which is facing an outbreak of bird flu.
Mozambican importers are authorised to purchase around 4,000 metric tonnes of chicken from these two countries, and the products are expected to arrive in around a month, said Américo Conceição, national director of Livestock Development at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, on Tuesday.
Local producers can also import hatching eggs from Brazil and Turkey to guarantee the production process, Conceição added.
Chicken and egg prices have risen in Mozambique since the government last week suspended poultry imports from South Africa, where bird flu, caused by the H5N8, H5N1, H5N2 and H7 strains, has been detected in the South African provinces of Gauteng, North West, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, Free State, Kwazulu Natal and Eastern Cape.
