Mozambique to Import 2 Million Units of Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccines from Botswana

Mozambique will import annually 2 million units of vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease, a disease that affects only cattle. The measure is part of the cooperation agreement in the area of livestock, signed last week in Botswana, following the state visit of President Filipe Nyusi to that country.

According to the vice-minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Olegário Banze, quoted by Notícias, 2 million units of vaccines are the necessary amount for the Mozambican bovine herd, which is already around two and a half million.

Olegário Banze, who was part of the presidential entourage, said that some vaccines as is the case of foot-and-mouth disease, at the regional level, are only manufactured by Botswana, while the others are produced in Mozambique.

“But it should be noted that Mozambique has already been receiving support from Botswana in vaccines since last years, especially for foot-and-mouth disease. What is going to happen on the basis of this agreement is the reinforcement to two million vaccines,” he said, stressing that the objective of this exercise is to increase production and productivity in the area of livestock.

The agreement between the two countries also provides for the genetic improvement of Mozambican cattle, through artificial insemination, embryo importation and the training in Botswana universities of livestock technicians and meat inspectors.

“Botswana has a good agricultural university and will train our technicians, specifically meat inspectors,” he added, stressing that this will be an immediate action.

In his intervention, Banze stressed that the cooperation between the two countries in the area of livestock is old and advantageous for Mozambique, since Botswana is very advanced in the production of vaccines, being one of the partners of the Mozambique Agronomic Research Institute.

The deputy minister explained that this genetic improvement exercise includes the import of embryos also for goats, “and we open space to invite Tswana businessmen to invest in this area in Mozambique, because there is potential”.

According to the governor, Botswana has a vast market in this area, hence the increase in production on the Mozambican side can capitalize even more on this market.

“The other advantage of the partnership, is that currently the food demands in the urban environments of the two countries have shown a great evolution, habits that increasingly need animal protein,” mentioned Notícias.

Remember that the vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease is underway in the country, where the government plans to vaccinate 100% of the cattle.
