Mozambique Showcases Agricultural Potential at the 35th Malawi International Trade Fair

Mozambique is participating from Thursday, May 22, in the 35th Malawi International Trade Fair, where it aims to showcase its agricultural potential for export and strengthen its production chain.

According to a statement, the event will take place in the city of Blantyre, where the presence of various African investors and entrepreneurs, as well as participants from other parts of the world, is expected. The opening ceremony will be presided over by Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera.

Held under the theme “Promoting Economic Growth Through Private Sector-Led Economic Transformation,” the fair aims to provide an opportunity for establishing a regional business network.

“The country will be represented by the provinces of Tete and Zambézia, with more than ten exhibitors showcasing the main potentials of the two regions to foster commercial integration. The stands are located near those of Zambia and Tanzania,” the statement details.

Mozambique and Malawi share historical and bilateral relations. Last year, the two governments signed an agreement in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, to simplify cross-border trade procedures with the aim of improving the flow of trade between the two countries. The memorandum marked an important milestone in the economic and diplomatic relations between the two neighboring territories and strategic partners in the Southern African region.

With the implementation of the agreement, the two African countries began exporting and importing up to 47 agricultural and manufactured products without the imposition of customs duties, for values not exceeding one thousand dollars.

This alliance took about three years to negotiate, including three rounds of discussions involving technical experts from both countries to agree on the terms and conditions to be implemented, ensuring that both benefit equitably from the new trade provisions.

The agreement was part of the recommendations of the 32nd meeting of the Trade Ministers Council of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which urged member states to commit to negotiations for the implementation of a simplified trade regime in the region.

The goal is for SADC countries to promote a more fluid and integrated trading environment, facilitating transactions and consequently boosting regional economic growth.
