As of last August, nearly ten million tonnes of various agricultural products have been traded in the current 2022 agricultural marketing year. This represents a 58% realization and a 4% growth compared to the previous marketing year.
For this season, a total commercialization of 17.3 million tonnes of agricultural products is foreseen.
The information was advanced this Monday, October 3, by the general director of the Mozambique Cereals Institute (ICM), Mahomed Valá, during a press conference, where he addressed the state of play of the agricultural commercialization process in the country.
Valá revealed that, so far, 312 agricultural operations have been financed, amounting to around 367 million meticais, which ensure the commercialisation of 120 thousand tons, having benefited, directly and indirectly, 180 thousand families.
The source also referred that, in partnership with the several agricultural commercialization intervenients, a quantity of more than 14 thousand tons is assured to guarantee the national food security.
“312 agricultural operations were financed, for an amount of about 367 million meticais that ensure the commercialization of 120 thousand tons, having benefited, directly and indirectly, 180 thousand families.”
Mahomed Valá emphasized that despite the efforts that the Executive has undertaken to catapult the agricultural production and commercialization chain, some challenges still persist.
“The constraints include establishing a platform for the dissemination of information about the commercialization process, improving access to credit adjusted to the activity, improving primary storage in silos in the production areas, and getting the private sector interested in participating in the management and operationalization of storage infrastructures,” Mahomed Valá cited.
Another need mentioned was the training of farmers to produce corn with the specifications required by the industry sector and potential markets in neighboring countries with emphasis on the Republic of South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, among others.
The current agricultural marketing campaign was launched in April this year by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and runs under the slogan “Agricultural Marketing Boosting Agribusiness and Industrialization”.
