Mozambique Debuts at Global Legal Sustainable Timber Forum in Macau

Gustavo Dgedge, Mozambique’s Secretary of State for Land and Environment, will represent the country at the Global Legal Sustainable Timber Forum (GLSTF), to be held in Macau on 22 and 23 September. The participation marks Mozambique’s debut at this annual event dedicated to promoting the legal and sustainable trade in tropical timber.

According to the Macau government, the forum will feature, “for the first time”, the participation of “senior officials from Mozambique and an official delegation from Mexico”. The Mozambican delegation will be led by Dgedge, who is among the keynote speakers scheduled for the opening session.

At the opening, the Secretary of State for Land and Environment will address the forum alongside ministers responsible for forestry and environmental affairs from Thailand, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic. The Mozambican delegation will also include Imede Falume, National Director of Forests and Wildlife.

Falume will take part in a separate panel bringing together representatives from China, Ghana, and Indonesia. Both Mozambican officials’ interventions will focus on strengthening the legal and sustainable trade in tropical timber.

The Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) considers that the first-time presence of officials from Mozambique and Mexico “further reinforces” Macau’s role as a platform for cooperation between China and Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries.

China established Macau as a platform for economic and trade cooperation with Portuguese-speaking markets in 2003. More than two decades later, the Macau government has extended this cooperation to Spanish-speaking countries, broadening the platform’s reach.

The forum will also feature Bruno Leão, director of the Association of Timber Export Industries of the State of Pará in northern Brazil, and Ivan Tomaselli, vice-president of the Brazilian Association of the Mechanically Processed Wood Industry. According to IPIM, the GLSTF is expected to bring together participants from 49 countries and regions, including Gabon, Togo, Malaysia, Ecuador, Peru, Switzerland, and France.

In addition to discussions on sustainable tropical timber trade, the gathering is also expected to launch preparatory work for the development of an international standard for aviation fuel produced from biomass.

The forum is further expected to mark the start of work on the creation of the Macau Green Standards Management System, an initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation on sustainability and environmental standards.
