Mozambique and Italy Strengthen Partnership in Environment, Fisheries and Agriculture Sectors

Mozambique and Italy took a significant step towards modernising their bilateral collaboration in the agriculture, environment and fisheries sectors at a recent meeting between the Mozambican Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, Roberto Albino, and the Italian ambassador to the country, Gabriele Annis.

According to Ídolo, the representatives marked the beginning of a new phase in the partnership between the two countries, with a focus on greater integration between the actions of various partners and the strategic inclusion of the Mozambican private sector.

The Mozambican minister stressed that the new phase of cooperation will require a joint effort, which ‘implies harmonising the actions and greater coordination of all the partners in the area, including the national private sector’, highlighting the need for more effective alignment in order to achieve tangible results.

According to Albino, strengthening relations between the government, international organisations and the private sector is essential for tackling the challenges of sustainable development and climate change.

For his part, Ambassador Annis expressed great enthusiasm about the future of collaboration between the two countries, emphasising that ‘agriculture, the environment and fisheries are priority sectors for our cooperation with Mozambique, within the scope of the Mattei Plan’ – an Italian initiative that aims to support sustainable development projects that align with the country’s vision to boost a greener and more inclusive economy.

The official made a point of emphasising his friendship with Roberto Albino, reinforcing his confidence that the partnership will reach new heights. As an example of this new dynamic, he mentioned the Manica Agri-Food Centre project, a structure that aims to transform the region into a centre of excellence in agri-food practices.

The official inauguration of the centre is scheduled for the first half of this year, marking the materialisation of one of the main joint projects.

This relaunch of co-operation focuses on strengthening agri-food and fishing infrastructures, promoting food security and environmental conservation, creating a solid basis for the development of public policies that benefit not only local communities, but also global sustainability.
