The city of Maputo plans to produce around 199,000 tonnes of various products during the 2024-25 agricultural campaign, which was launched on Friday (8), the Agência de Informação de Moçambique portal reported on Monday, November 11.
The Council of State Representation Services in Maputo City is pleased that the projected quantity represents an increase of around six per cent on the previous harvest.
The Mozambican capital is also pleased to have achieved self-sufficiency in vegetable production. Chicken meat production is expected to grow by 7 per cent.
According to the Secretary of State in Maputo City, Vicente Joaquim, the climate forecast indicates that the 2024-25 campaign is expected to be rainy, which will help to meet the water needs of the production fields.
The Maputo city government is optimistic about the growth in production and predicts an increase of 2.5 per cent in relation to the 2023-24 agricultural harvest. The 199,000 tonnes expected will come from an area of 8632 hectares.
Vicente Joaquim explained that with regard to livestock, the forecasts point to 11,100 tonnes of various meats, 8,500 tonnes of which will be chicken. Beef is expected to produce 2,200 tonnes, goat 127,200 tonnes, pork 50,300 tonnes, turkey 11,800 tonnes, duck 48,300 tonnes and rabbit 24,600 tonnes.
He emphasised that the city expects to produce 324,000 dozen eggs. As for meat, the expected increase is around 2.5 per cent due to the rain and investment in resources to allow extension technicians to assist producers.
Maputo currently has 42 extension technicians who will assist around 14,500 producers.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of State in Maputo City urged young people not to let themselves be led or manipulated by hate messages, which only create division in the construction of the city and the country in general.
