Manica: Italy Disburses Over $40 Million for Construction of Agro-Food Center

The city of Chimoio, in the province of Manica, will host a large agro-food center, a project funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), with an estimated investment of 40.7 million dollars (2.5 billion meticais). The facility is expected to become operational in 2027, reported the newspaper O País this Tuesday, May 27.

The center’s main purpose will be the production, processing, and marketing of agricultural and animal-origin products, aiming not only to supply the local market but also to export to international markets. The site for the project has already been selected, and construction is scheduled to begin within the next two months.

During a visit to the site, the Italian ambassador to Mozambique, Gabriele Phillip Annis, highlighted “the economic potential of the initiative,” stating that it “could strengthen agricultural value chains and improve the income of local producers.” The diplomat also emphasized that exporting processed products “will be a major asset for the region’s economic growth.”

Meanwhile, the mayor of Chimoio, João Ferreira, noted that the project will include improvements to the local airport, aiming to facilitate the distribution of agro-food products to external markets, a logistical component “crucial to turning the center into a true export hub,” he pointed out.

The agro-food center is part of local government efforts and international partners’ initiatives to boost the agricultural sector by creating job opportunities, promoting industrialization, and contributing to the country’s food security. With the implementation of this project, a positive impact on the economy of Chimoio and the Manica province is expected, consolidating the city as a national and regional reference in the processing and export of agricultural and livestock products.
