The government and its partners will invest around 60 million meticais in agricultural equipment for farmers affected by the severe drought in Manica Province.
The initiative, promoted by the Mangwana program, aims to provide adequate conditions to boost productivity and food security.
“Much of this investment is allocated to irrigation kits, which include motor pumps, pipes, and water tanks. All of this is with a vision to address climate change, which we are all experiencing,” said Mangwana Program Director Augusto Jaime, as quoted by O País.
The Governor of Manica Province, Francisca Tomás, acknowledged that the effects of El Niño are devastating but expressed hope that beneficiaries will produce positive results in upcoming farming seasons.
“Our province must be a benchmark in agricultural production, livestock, and fish farming (…) Barué will become a potato district when we all produce potatoes,” she stated, as quoted by the newspaper.
In total, nearly 120,000 families have been affected by El Niño in the districts of Guro, Macate, and Gondola. The phenomenon has severely impacted agricultural production due to water shortages.
In addition to Manica, the central provinces of Sofala and Tete are also suffering from the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.
