One of the country’s cotton producers, the JFS Group, has become the first company in Mozambique to obtain Regenagri certification – a regenerative agriculture program that attests to the sustainability of the land and the social and environmental responsibility of the agricultural production chain – the JFS Group said in a statement on November 29.
Founded in 1897, the group works with 40,000 small farms, providing interest-free credit for inputs, training and technical assistance, as well as access to certifications. “All of this is done in line with the minimum prices set by the government, based on international market conditions, ensuring that farmers receive around 60% of the export value of FOB (free on board) fiber,” reads the statement.
The CEO of the JFS Group, Francisco Ferreira dos Santos, said that obtaining “Regenagri certification is an important milestone in our commitment to social and environmental responsibility. We see cotton production as our opportunity to regenerate lives and the earth.”
He added: “Global agriculture needs to adapt, and small-scale agriculture is no exception. Mozambique, with its traditionally low-input, multi-crop farming system, is well placed to become a model for regenerative agriculture, benefiting both farmers and the entire ecosystem.”
For his part, Regenagri’s managing director, Franco Constantini, congratulated the JFS Group on this achievement and on becoming the first company in Mozambique to do so. “Their achievement is a big step forward for regenerative agriculture. We hope that JFS Group will inspire a wider transition to more environmentally friendly farming techniques across the country, contributing to healthier and more fertile soil, promoting biodiversity and improving water and energy management,” he said.
