The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) will provide a total of €4 million (approximately 289.5 million meticais) to finance the production of 90 tonnes of coffee in Mozambique this year and strengthen the crop’s value chain. According to the Secretary of State for the Sea and Fisheries, Momade Juízo, the initiative will involve 2,200 families and aims to spread knowledge and develop strategies to expand coffee cultivation in the country, improving the livelihoods of various communities.
“As part of the strategy for developing this crop, the Government aims to prioritise research, investment, and training of technicians, with a ten-year plan to reach around 5,000 hectares of production area,” he stated.
Last year, the Government asserted that Mozambique has the potential to become “a player” in the international coffee market, highlighting the need for more research and investment in the sector. “Mozambican coffee is organic, meeting international market demands. The country is well positioned in global rankings.”
“We must invest in coffee cultivation for biodiversity conservation, as this approach is receiving significant attention from international organisations. On the social front, coffee production is increasingly important, as it is currently a source of income for many farmers,” he emphasised.
The Government also noted that Mozambique’s accession to the International Coffee Organization in June 2023 opens up opportunities to attract investment and technical assistance for the development of a national coffee industry that aims to compete globally.
