IFAD Names PROCAVA Mozambique as the Best Program in Its Funding Portfolio

The Inclusive Development of Agri-Food Value Chains Program (PROCAVA) has been recognized by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) as the best program in its funding portfolio. The distinction highlights the work carried out in Mozambique to promote sustainable, inclusive, and results-oriented agriculture.

According to IFAD, the selection was the result of a comparative evaluation among several similar programs implemented in different African countries and co-financed by the fund. Criteria such as good management, monitoring, and performance evaluation were considered, placing PROCAVA in the spotlight among ongoing initiatives on the continent.

The Minister of Agriculture, Environment, and Fisheries, Roberto Mito Albino, stated that the recognition demonstrates that “Mozambique continues to show how effective management and results-oriented planning are done.” Speaking recently in Maputo, the minister emphasized the merit of the national team involved in implementing the program.

Implemented since May 2020, PROCAVA is scheduled for completion in 2030 and covers 75 districts across all provinces of the country. The program focuses on actions that promote inclusive and sustainable agricultural development, strengthening the role of smallholder farmers in value chains.

The main objectives of PROCAVA are to reduce poverty, improve food and nutritional security, and strengthen the livelihoods of rural communities. The program also emphasizes climate resilience, encouraging agricultural practices adapted to climate change to ensure more stable production over time. According to official data, PROCAVA aims to benefit around 180,500 families, mostly smallholder farmers. The initiative promotes increased household income by strengthening resilient agri-food value chains, with particular focus on horticulture, cassava, and red meat production.

Recently, China launched the Africa Bridge project in Mozambique, a cooperation initiative for sustainable development between China and several African countries. The initiative aims to support Mozambique in reducing agricultural poverty through educational assistance, infrastructure improvement, and enhanced cooperation in the agricultural sector.
