Government Pledges to Approve Agricultural Insurance Policy to Support Small Farmers

The Government has promised to soon approve an agricultural insurance policy aimed at regulating and coordinating stakeholders in the agrarian sector, while also ensuring that existing insurance packages in the market can benefit small-scale farmers.

The policy instrument had already been developed under the previous administration but needed revisions to align with the new ministerial reorganization.

During a roundtable discussion, various actors from the agricultural sector debated strategies to improve crisis management mechanisms during periods of drought and cyclones. Often, the recovery of devastated crops is ensured by insurance companies, and the Government has pledged to support the implementation of the policy to regulate the sector.

While acknowledging that few people are currently involved in agricultural insurance, the Center of Excellence in Agri-food Systems at Eduardo Mondlane University stressed the need for the policy’s approval.

It is estimated that around 4 million farmers in the country have already engaged with agricultural insurance services, 40,000 of whom are smallholders.
