This Tuesday, October 15, the government approved the decree that revises the organisation and operation of the Agricultural Research Institute of Mozambique (IIAM), created on October 27, 2004.
The approval took place during the 29th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers, and the measure aims to adjust the powers, competences, autonomy, management, budgetary regime, organisation and functioning of the body.
According to a Carta de Moçambique publication, the Executive’s decision comes six months after the institution, managed by Zélia Menete, complained of a lack of funds to implement agricultural research to combat chronic malnutrition and other problems affecting the country.
‘Research costs money. As well as financial resources, we also face the challenge of a lack of human resources, i.e. qualified researchers at the highest level (masters and doctorates),’ the director-general pointed out at the time.
Zélia Menete also stressed the need for the institution to increase productivity in agriculture, and that, to this end, it must invest in certified seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, among other appropriate agricultural practices.
At the session of the Council of Ministers, the Executive also considered information on the presidential and legislative elections, provincial assemblies and provincial governors, which took place on the 9th, as well as the second progress report on the activities of the Commission for Reflection on the Decentralised Governance Model (CREMOD).
